Is Windscreen Cover Necessary?
Many vehicle owners assume that the cost of repairing or replacing their car’s windscreen is covered by insurance, but this is not always true. Depending on the type of car insurance you have, what is often included as standard is cover for windscreen repairs or replacement only if you have been involved in an accident, or as a result of severe weather. Damage to your windscreen caused by anything else, whether intentional or accidental, is not included.
How to Tell if Windscreen Cover is Included
The easiest way to tell if windscreen cover is included in your car insurance is to read the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) provided by your insurer, or to contact your insurer and ask them. Pay attention to what is listed for your particular type of cover, along with the general exclusions that will also be included in the PDS. Typical insurance cover available in New Zealand include:
- Comprehensive – covers cost of repairs or replacement for most damage, regardless of whether you were at fault or not. Usually includes some form of windscreen and autoglass cover, but with some limits or exclusions.
- Third-Party Fire & Theft – covers some costs associated with your car being damaged or lost due to theft or fire, along with damage to other people’s property caused by your car. Might include some windscreen cover, but only for repairs and replacement necessitated due to fire or your car being broken into.
- Third-Party Only – only covers damage caused to other people’s vehicles by your car.
Is Windscreen Cover Worth It?
Most insurers only offer more extensive windscreen cover as part of a premium version of their comprehensive car insurance, or as an optional add-on. Which might result in you wondering whether the extra cost is worth it. The short answer to this is yes. The windscreen of your car is a very important safety feature, and any damage to it puts you and other road users at risk. And no matter how careful you are, it is impossible to state that you will never need to repair or replace your vehicle’s windscreen, with the risk of this happening increasing if you frequently drive long-distance or on dirt roads. When windscreen cover is offered as an optional add-on by your insurer, it either:
- Introduces a repair or replace benefit for windscreens – and sometimes other autoglass too – that is not included in your car insurance, or
- It reduces or eliminates the excess you would normally pay when claiming for windscreen repairs or replacement, while also protecting your No-Claim Discount.
The cost of repairing or replacing a windscreen isn’t always high but can be an inconvenient expense if you’re unfortunate enough to have to have it repaired or replaced twice in a single year. Not factoring in the cost of re-calibrating the Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) fitted to newer vehicles. However, if after-market windscreens for your car aren’t available locally, the cost of replacing a windscreen becomes prohibitive.
